Displaying art. In displaying something or in the act of showing, one is always positioning and profiling oneself. The selection, arrangement and placement of objects in the exhibition space affect the possibilities of their interpretation. Even a thematic framing reduces the complexity of the individual work. Every new juxtaposition effects a change. Reception is always dependent on how the work are made visible to us and the mode of displaying.
These curatorial considerations are to be tested in real terms in the Kleine Humboldt Galerie’s upcoming exhibition, which takes place from July 21–31 as an art festival in the atrium of the Humboldt University of Berlin. ENTER the real world highlights the subjective processes of curating and reception.
The exhibition as experiment. A presentation of artistic works in various media takes place in the exhibition space that is not complete at any time, but which develops in the course of the exhibition’s duration. In fact, the show opens with only a few works: a drawing by Mark Dion and the screening of a half-hour video by Ming Wong. Day by day additional works will be presented; affecting changes in the arrangement such that new constellations, references and readings from these spatial shifts will always arises. Special events will take place on five consecutive days, which include further screenings as well as a reading by the emerging author Leif Randt. Enabling an observation of the exhibition’s construction and a comprehension of its effective transformation lays bare its ways of showing and breaks open the display. Something new happens everyday – you have to be there to experience it.
